The Batmobile from the film ‘Batman Begins’, a.k.a The Tumbler. The latest model in the Batman Automobilia collection.
A jet powered high tech military vehicle capable of 100 mph, and the ability to jump 30 feet in the air.
And if that’s not enough, if the main body gets damaged the front wheels can eject to form a motorcycle.
Obviously it’s a modern take on Batman’s transport. Gone are the sleek bat finned roadsters of the past, replaced with this black anonymous pile of armoured steel. I must be honest it doesn't do anything for me.
No doubt it fits in very well with the darker revitalised version of Batman and possibly takes some inspiration from the second instalment of the 1986 comic, Batman: The Dark Knight . In it the Batmobile is little more than a tank.
Well, call me old fashioned but I think I prefer the familiar bat finned roadsters from the past. The Tumbler might add some realism to Batman, but when the main character in the story is a bloke who spends his nights dressed as a bat, you’re really not looking for realism.
Next time. Taking the bat finned roadster theme a bit too far - The Batmobile from Batman Forever.
Mike, I'm with you. The Tumbler is definitely an acquired taste and the finned versions are most assuredly the sentimental favorites. But prgress marches on and who knows what the next on-screen incarnation will look like.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you agree , Ed. I thought it was just me .
ReplyDeletewell if you consider the Tumbler in the light of the previous versions (batman forever etc), its a definite improvement. The finned stylised machines from the comics and campy tv series work well within their environment, but the world of the Dark Knight is tech heavy, modern and grittily real. When you see the Tumbler flying along the road being bazookaed by the Joker, you have to admit it is impressive!
ReplyDeleteI agree to some extent , Bill. The Tumbler does look right in that setting and fitted into the retelling of the story but to me it just looks like a bulky unattractive military vehicle that would probably be more at home as an Action Force toy rather than something unique to Batman.
ReplyDeleteThe Batmobile in Batman Forever went too far in the opposite direction creating something akin to a clowns car!
The Batmobile in the Keaton Batman film looked like it had muscle and still retained it's comicbook roots.
So If you count that as a modern interpretation of Batman's car that's what my money's on.
