There's something wonderful about the boxart of the Molto Thunderbirds boxed set from Spain as shown above, set below. It's quite SWORDish in a way and I wonder who the boxartist was?
It's not a set I have here at Moonbase alas but I have seen one in the flesh at the NEC Memorabila show years ago. Are the toys the same as JR21's? And only this week I was intrigued to see this apparently ultra-rare Molto Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on fleabay. What an incredibly complicated toy design to re-create in plastic! Anybody ever seen one?
It's a good thing I never knew about that Thunderbirds set back then, or I would have been overwhelmed by the longing. (Hardly the first time I've felt that way while reading this blog...)
ReplyDeleteIsn't that Molto Chitty Chitty Bang Bang simply a repackaged version of the Corgi toy? The position of the figures is identical. If so, my sister had one!
The Molto TBirds look identical to the JR21 toys, so like Chitty they've repackaged them.
ReplyDeleteIf you look closely, the molds have been modified to include some raised lettering for the 'THUNDERBIRD' text and vehicle number. The Rosenthal counterparts had a smooth fuselage with factory applied decals. It's an odd production decision, since the Molto versions also include decals as well.
ReplyDeleteIt is a beautiful set Richard I agree. They came seperately as well in gorgeous boxes. All look superb but I haven't got any either. The raised lettering point is fascinating, thanks [Jim?].Just imagine if a MOLTO SWORD toy turns up out of the plastic ether! Bene bene! And Yorkie, is there a JR21 version of the Chitty do you think?
ReplyDeleteHi, the Chitty
ReplyDeleteMolto is almost an exact copy of the Corgi , even down to the box design. It is , however, much larger approx 12" long without the wings attached. It is a plastic friction drive. I am lucky enough to have one in my collection
