ED's TIN: The Marx YB-52 Airfield

This is a follow-up to the Oct 2023 post of the Linemar YB-52 tin-litho bomber. I had some airfield photos in another folder which I had forgotten about and thought you guys would like to see some of this stuff on my airfield display - along with various other toys.

THE AOSHIMA THUNDERBIRD 3 LAUNCH BAY

Hi,

Managed to get the Aoshima kit of the Thunderbird 3 launch bay. 

Once more I needed to replace a load of bits and add a load of bits, but it looks nice on display.

This one hasn't been re-released by AIP like TB1 and TB2 have. Still, I've completed the set!

Mystery Space Toy Parts

I saw this bundle online on auction last year and thought, Hmm, I know the middle TB1/TB3 mash-up but what are those two mystery parts at the sides?

I'd ask the astronauts but they said Speak to the Hand!

Anyone know?

 A rally of recent roadsters I've touched-up, now destined for the car cabinet.

Some turned out well and some not, like the white Gruesome, which I painted entirely white to cover up my complete hash at the livery.

The small Matchbox FAB1 was a tester for my shocking pink paint pen, which was a decent colour match. I just need a cheap scrapper Dinky FAB1 now to do up!

The plastic racer in the middle is a Rosenthal Lotus, one of a series of lovely little racing cars they released in the Sixties [covered in my book on JR Toys]. The Lotus is the easiest to find I would say. This one was on a Doncaster second hand market stall in a box of scrappers. I haven't done anything to this one.

WILL'S TIN BOEING SST

Following on from Ed’s Great posts is on his tin aircraft, here is my TM toys Boeing SST Panam. 

It is 18 inches long, battery operated and has a rolling function with flashing lights and an arm which raises it up to simulate a takeoff. 

Unfortunately it is not in the best condition and these functions do not work, but one can imagine..... .

I do love these small Marx space playsets to use in a diorama but would really hate to take them off their display cards. Trying to find already unboxed pieces has been a bear though.

DINKY SPV BACK ON THE ROAD

After some discussion with Colonel White I'm able to release pics of my newly restored and finished Moonbase SPV rescued from a Cas market stall.

Earlier progress was covered last month here. A Mysteron-delayed Completion consisted of new colouring with a metallic paint pen, new decals kindly from Wotan, new rear tracks home-made from the bits box and too big but hey-ho, aerials were home made from clothes price labels, front panel was home made from plastic; top button was home made from the bits box.

BACHMANN AMERICANA KITS BY PAUL ADAMS

The final range of Paint-by-Number kits from Bachmann was the Americana series, which first appeared in the 1963 Paint-by-Number catalogue.

This was by far the smallest, and shortest-lived, series made by Bachmann. There were just three kits announced, all of which were produced, and no further additions to the range. They were introduced even as the other ranges were beginning to be cut back.

I have not seen a 1964 catalogue, but the line had been dropped by the time the 1965 edition appeared, just leaving the Bird, Dog, and Animal kits. It seems they have never been re-issued.

All depicted humorous human subjects, and featured scenes of life in small-town America, in the style of a Norman Rockwell painting.

They were again snap-together kits in the usual Bachmann style, and were moulded in the same pinkish plastic. These kits had more parts than usual, and the side of the box actually states 'Not Recommended for Pre-school Children'. All had a scenic base appropriate to the subject. Paints, brushes, and a bottle of Bachmann Styrene Painting Fluid and Glue were included, along with Paint-by-Number instructions.

The kits came in boxes with lift-off lids, which carried a photograph of the completed model. All sold for the same price, $1.98, and were numbered in the 6000 series.

6000-198 Fisher Boy

A boy and his dog are returning home from a successful fishing trip, and walking past a NO FISHING sign. There is also a rabbit hiding beneath the tree stump.

6001-198 Bowlers

An elderly gentleman seems perplexed by the bowling style of his female companion.

6002-198 Junior League

Two boys and an adult Umpire are playing baseball - or at least discussing the rules.

The box top describes these as 'Humorous and Exciting Scenes', and 'Scenes in Full Dimension'. The catalogue stating that the kits are intended 'for the whole family'.

Bachmann did not extend their Paint-by-Number line any further, and over the next few years more and more kits were retired, until the line was dropped completely in the late 1960s. 

In the 1970s and 1980s some of the kits were re-issued, mainly the smaller Birds, but the larger and more expensive kits have not been seen since the 1960s.
