How Many Frankenstein Films Did Boris Karloff Make ?

My Dark Corner of this Sick World is a You Tube movie review channel devoted to what most people consider bad movies (and a few good ones). Frankenstein 1970, in which Boris Karloff plays Frankenstein rather than the creature, was recently reviewed. This got me wondering, how many Frankenstein films did Boris Karloff make in his long career?

He only played the Monster in the first three Universal films: Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and Son of Frankenstein (1939). Then retired from the role.

But this would not be his last appearance in a Universal Frankenstein movie. Following on from Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), Universal made House of Frankenstein, which added Count Dracula to the cast.

In House of Frankenstein (1944), Karloff plays the central villain, Dr Gustav Niemann, who has just escaped from prison, and is out for revenge on those who put him there. This time Glenn Strange played the Monster.

Then came Frankenstein 1970 (1958), in which Karloff plays Baron Victor von Frankenstein. Mike Lane played the Monster.

Mad Monster Party ? (1967) was a stop-motion animated film, in which Boris Karloff provided the voice of Baron Boris von Frankenstein. The puppet somewhat resembled him.

So that makes six films by my count.

Phantasm Movie and Cars

I have not seen the movie Phantasm. I found the trailer on You Tube. That looks pretty weird.

According to the Internet Movie Cars Database the hearse is a 1966 Cadillac Funeral Coach Superior Sovereign Landaulet.

I rather like the Chevrolet ice-cream truck.

The film had an R Rating in the US. No one under 17 admitted without an adult. So I doubt there were any toys. In Britain it had an X Certificate, no one under 18 admitted at all. Today it is down to a 15.

There does look to be a modern adult collectable die-cast from the film of a 1971 Plymouth Cuda 340 - I assume the car driven by the hero ?

This is a 1/18th scale die-cast model. It is part of the American Muscle series from Ertl. That likely means expensive. It is certainly big.

No sign of the hearse.

The Phantom's Prisoner

 

When I was a kid the agonised man behind bars at the back of this fabulous Bama Aurora cover art scared the bejeeses outa me! Far more than the Phantom, although his green head was pretty creepy! I used to wonder who the poor prisoner was. Anyone know?

Just watching Hellboy II the Golden Army. One of the real horrors of the film are the tooth fairies in the first half.

These voracious little creatures like nothing more that human teeth, hence the name! No threepenny bits under the pillow from them!

There have been other little meanies in other flicks.

One I remember is Don't Turn out the Lights or similar. There's a dreadful scene where the mother of the household is dragged down the coal chute or something into the bowels of hell. She's dragged by, yes, little humanoid critters that terroriser the family in the house.

The Gate is another. This flick will appeal to rocketry fans. The hero of the piece uses one to slay the band of ghoulies causing havoc and worse in his home. Like all of these films there's a hole, which you really should fill in!
