RED MOON ANNIE

To celebrate the 70th birthday of Eagle, here's a few photos of my old scratch-built  Dan Dare Anastasia model I built way back in the early eighties when my only reference at the time was a 1974 Dan Dare Annual which featured a reprint of the second Dan Dare story, 'The Red Moon Mystery' originally published from October, 1951 to June , 1952.

In that story, the 'Annie' is finally abandoned in space by Dan Dare, Digby, and Prof. Peabody.

Sadly, my model has had a few knocks over the years, in particular the lower half of the starboard wing fin which has broken off, and the once clear acetate has yellowed.

But, in spite of that I thought I dust it off and take a few snaps.

In the Eagle comic, having been left in a Sargasso sea in space, the Anastasia is revived some four years later during 'The Reign of The Robots' story but this time with a slightly different and possibly more familiar hull window lay out.

Here's a close up of my 'Red Moon' layout. My lack of reference at the time meant I had to take a few guesses at some of the internal detail.

The Anastasia remained for most of the following stories until artists, Don Harley and Bruce Cornwall introduced a new craft, the oddly named Zylbat. However, when that was inadvertently destroyed by Space Fleet, once again the Anastasia returned as Dan Dare's personal spacecraft.

VINYL TOYS: BUILDING CHARACTER

Hi Woodsie

When I was lecturing/teaching I developed a series of cartoons to help answer the questions I was being asked over and over again! Now I'm looking to expand it to include the stuff I'm learning about vinyl toy making and I'll publish it when it's done.

Here's an example of a revised page, now it's been relettered and coloured...

Speaking of Vinyl toys and the VERY ARDUOUS process of "doing it yourself", at the beginning of the C-19 outbreak I decided to import 200kg of PVC Plastisol liquid plastic from China!

Needless to say this has been very expensive and VERY complicated! (I could draw a comic strip about it, but I don't know how I'd make it funny!)

Anyway, having "all the time in the world" doesn't equate to tangible results! I just need to work harder!

BUCK ROGERS: 25TH CENTURY COLLECTABLES

Hi Woodsy,

You are doing a good job entertaining us all at this strange time.

In case it is of use, here are a few things I culled from the internet, over time, on Buck Rogers.

Most of us probably remember Buck form the rather campy 1970s TV series, but he started in the 1920s, and I believe as a cartoon character he predated Flash Gordon. There is an excellent website based on the collection of the late Roland Anderson, which includes some of the early adventures:

I have included a compilation of what were aptly described as "nifty space ships" from this site. Buck Rogers Comic Strips

Perhaps this was the first large-scale merchandising for a space character. 

There were toys, board games (including a compendium of three, with lovely art) and comic books, as well as a cut-out puppet theatre, with two great backdrops- on the one of the city included here I have superimposed one of the cut-out figures. 

Alas, all out of my price range!

MORE THAN A FEELING

Just listening to Boston's More than a Feeling from their self-titled debut album. I wasn't overly fussed on Boston's super-clean fuzzy sound when I was a teenager. It just wasn't heavy enough but over the years I've grown to love it and now enjoy listening to this album whenever I can. I close my eyes and just drift away!

Great LP cover too! Do you/ did you have more than a feeling?

JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN DOPPELGANGER COLLECTABLES

VAN DARE

Hi Woodsy,

Given the recent post on the Eagle comic, I thought you might like to see my Corgi Eagle Dan Dare set, number 98965, which I picked up at a collector's fair a few years ago.

It is a Limited Edition of 7500, mine being number 6004. Dan Dare appears on a yellow and silver Volkswagen van, and the Mekon on a green and purple Bedford CA van. The copyright date on the box is 1991. Corgi planned, but never released, a Dan Dare spaceship/car number C278 in 1981.

GENUINE DAN DARE TOYS

Hi Woodsy,

A follow up to the Eagle. Some Dan Dare toys from an exhibition, taken a few years ago. Not mine, although I have the circular Dan Dare jigsaw. Particularly like the genuine Cosmic Ray gun- does it shoot genuine cosmic rays?!!
