The Wand Company Star Trek Communicator

Hi.

Thought I'd share with you something I treated myself to recently. This is the Star Trek communicator by The Wand Company.

It is a superbly accurate prop replica, made from scans of a surviving hero prop. Not only does it look and feel totally convincing, it sounds it too.

It makes all the correct beeps and chirps and operates by opening and closing as it should. The display lights work and the central dial makes the correct moving patterns.

The device has an excellent charge/display stand that it sticks to magnetically. It charges from a USB charger. There is a lovely display case too.

The best bit though, is the realisation of a childhood dream. It can pair with your phone (via bluetooth) and then works as an actual communicator!

I don't think you could get a better prop replica. I'm delighted with it.

Did you Repair broken Toys When you were a Kid?

Many adult collectors fix old busted toys.

Its part of the fun of collecting toys for some people.

Some repairs are so sophisticated that they are true restorations and we have covered a few on Moonbase over the years.

One of the most memorable was erstwhile contributor Ferryman's restoring of a battered Fairylite Supercar I posted 8 years ago. The results were amazing.

So how did we approach this as kids?

Did you attempt any toy repairs in your tender years?

Maybe re-loop an Action Man/ GI Joe elastic? Perhaps re-insert the wires of a Major Matt Mason figure? Or what about replace the wheels on your matchbox cars and so on.

I'm not terribly practical as an adult although I will have a go at fixing old toys. I can't see me repairing toys in the Sixties and early Seventies unless it was just a bit of sellotape and paperclip!

Did you fix your broken toys when you were a kid? Did someone else or did they get chucked on the scrapheap?

I plan to do some repairs on some of my toy boxes this Easter when I get some time off. Looking forward to it.

Hi,

Finished making McCoy's little medical scanner.

Decided to go with a non-working model for ease. Made this entirely out of scrap, including a scent bottle lid, some hologram stickers and half a metal yoyo that came in a christmas cracker!

The pouch case is done too.

MORE OR

I love Or.

I've posted about the little alien a few times over the years. He's a bit of a blog legend.

Basically Or was the never-produced mini-alien friend of Major Matt Mason. He was to have his own spinning space disk too.

I first came across Or in the 90's in my toy bible Toys of the Sixties.

I saw it in colour for the first time in Space Toys of the Sixties.

The first time I ever saw what Or and its Orbitor might look like in the flesh was Frank May's custom model showcased on the brilliant Wildtoys site.

So I was thrilled this year to see another custom Or model on the net on a well known auction site. Made by a Canadian modeller in Quebec, Frenchboomer, I like the disc's simplicity, the tubular dome and the classic Or look.

Having seen Or again I realise that he sort of reminds of a toy robot I've been noticing for years on the net, the Dancing Robot! Only sort of!

RIP PROFESSOR STEPHEN HAWKING

A sad day for the world. Professor Stephen Hawking has passed away.

Whenever I think of time I will think of him.

Rest in Peace Professor. We are far less without you.
