I've never been a big train fan - other than the fab BiG BiG trains! - but old boxed sets like this Lionel are just so great to look at, never mind play with.
I love the single name of this set, Allegheny. Where's that then?

Pennsylvania
ReplyDeleteThanks Baron. Have you been?
DeleteThe Allegheny mountains run north and south through the eastern part of the US.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the West Virginia Allegheny mountains.
Thanks Scott. Blimey, you live there! Small world!
DeleteWoodsy, in this particular set, Lionel was probably referring to the Allegheny Mountain area as Baron and Scott said. But, just to confuse things a bit, there was also an 'Allegheny'-class steam engine. We give names to our steam engines, like, 'Atlantic', 'Pacific', Hudson,' 'Challenger', 'Big Boy', etc. based on wheel arrangement and 2-6-6-6 (in Whyte notation) is an articulated locomotive type. The name comes from the locomotive's first service with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway beginning in 1941, where it was used to haul loaded coal trains over the Allegheny Mountains.
ReplyDeleteInsightful info this Ed. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Trains and the history of trains must be so important in North America. I can tell they are to you.
DeleteP.S.: It appears Lionel included a 2-4-2 Columbia-type locomotive in this set.
ReplyDeleteDue to the size of the North American continent, railroads took an early role in helping settle the area and provided important transportation/communication links between communities.
ReplyDeleteAs for the train set shown: for some of us there's nothing more satisfying and relaxing than spending time tinkering with and operating O scale 3 rail trains.
Thanks Steve. It's hard for us Brits to fully appreciate how big North America is. True continental train travel must be a vast undertaking to build, maintain and coordinate. The mind biggles
