On route to the German First of May bank holiday festival today where we are staying, whilst waiting for the free shuttle bus, we visited an old haunt, the train station book shop.
Always a litmus of the nation's tastes, It's enjoyable to browse the many magazines in particular.
We've been visiting for decades and to be honest tastes haven't changed much.
Here's a few snaps of the train mags and books (a national obsession), hobbies and comics sections.
See anything you like?
The Mata Hari comic with it's Art Nouveau styling looks interesting. But even though there's almost half a cover to work with, Google Lens comes up blank!
ReplyDeleteCan't see Mata Hari Looey.

Ah Zack! I've got some old Zacks from Deutschland. Well spotted Arto!
DeleteThere certainly are a lot of railway magazines, and some on aircraft, alas for me, all in German.
ReplyDeleteI thought the Maerklin catalogue might have been free Paul but it was 20 Euro!
DeleteWhat a wonderful trip back in time. I remember the NYC Port Authority Bus Station book shop being a great place to buy all sorts of odd books and magazines. Also the magazine stands at Grand Central RR station. Nothing remotely like that around anymore. In the U.S., it's like, "Duh! What's a book?!?!" SFZ
ReplyDeleteSuch great memories SF. I love your descriptions of vintage NYC!
DeleteAsterix and Lucky Luke comics are popular in Germany too.
