All the key elements were there and told with style and pace: Mulder and Scully, Cancer Man, a global alien conspiracy and plenty of set pieces. The Texan playground with the subterranean ooze from Hell was great! A fabulous move from the small to the big screen. Give me more Dana and Fox! The pair is out there!
With joyous extraterrestrial anticipation I then watched the 2008 X Files film, I want to Believe. Made a decade later in 2008, Mulder and Scully had got older. Much older - to the point where they looked bored of the whole thing.
That's pretty much how I felt, bored. It was tedious. I felt like I'd been abducted by turkeys. I had no idea what the global conspiracy was, the same ham actors kept re-appearing with organ boxes and Mulder's basic reason to be in the film was to pester Scully into coming back to look at one more case. She didn't want to and neither did I. It was mind-numbingly pants. I had to switch it off. What were they thinking? Have you seen it?
So, its a return to Season 1 for me, back to the 1990's glory days of abductions and monsters of the week. Hallelujah!
The first movie is great, linking smoothly seasons 5 and 6. The second one would've made a mediocre standalone episode. It wasn't terrible, it was just the wrong story to tell, what was the point? Billy Connolly was good though.
ReplyDeleteYes, Billy C is the best part of the film Kev.
DeleteI actually re-watched series one episode one a few days ago. Very nostalgic! I remember the early series as better, like they were for Supernatural. The American lore monsters were entertaining.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm just re-watching Series 1 at the moment Khusru. Fabulous TV.
DeleteI recall getting the end of Season 2 and the cliffhanger 'Anasazi' and i felt the series had peaked, it was so well made. Then it ventured into the big screen arena and it seemed to become much weaker. Ive sat through all the films, and especially disliked the 'head transplant' theme in one of them (possibly the second) which included the russian experimentation on dogs, which I felt particularly abhorrent. At the time, X-Files were shown on one of the cable/satellite channels ahead of the BBC and I would get my mum to record them on VHS tape! Eventually, as the series progressed, Mulder left and Scully wandered off and two other agents took their place and I followed Scully into obscurity. As a result, I have never seen the later series, until it was recently brought back for a final series, which mulder and Scully fairly dragged themselves through, looking even more tired and jaded than before. During its heyday, there were a ton of books and comics produced, most of which were pretty good. If I can ever find them in the attic again, I might give them another read over! Bill
ReplyDeleteSo are there 3 X-Files movies Bill?
DeleteWe just finished Season 1, and the finale, “Erlenmeyer Flask,” I thought was excellent. SFZ
ReplyDeleteBuilding up to that one SFZ. I've been distracted by the movies!
