Samurai art has completely kicked off its Kabuki since I was young fan.
Back in the Seventies I adored model dioramas like Night Attack by Ronin.
I drooled over Sensei Roald Knutsen's limited edition prints
I fell in love and often copied the drawings in the tome Secrets of the Samurai.
But hurl a shuriken in today's future and you find the same fascination for Samurai, both my own and many others.
This beautiful artwork for example, Clans of the Mountain, is by David Benzal.
But modern warriors, Jedi's and heroes have morphed and merged with old Japan to give us new icons of Bushido.
Instagram's Niserain captured his toy figures to create the sumptuous Samurai War Machine.
In homage to my old Nippon mentors and a nod to the modern wave here's my own Ronin in the Rain.
Have you any Samurai art, models or toys?
It's Rainin' on your Ronin so much he'll be Drownin', Woodsy.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! And he was only Nippon out for some milk!
DeleteI rememer seeing the 1/32 Tamiya figure sets back in the seventies and quite liking the look of them. One of my favourite samurai sequences on film is from Zack Snyder's mangaesque Sucker Punch. Its chock full of classic manga tropes, a tiny heroine dressed as a japanese schoolgirl, big guns, even bigger samurai, fire and a battle royale! The extended scene shows the approach of the trio to the temple in the middle distance as Scott Glenn's 'wise man' character lays out the terms of the quest, all done to Bjork's excellent 'Army of Me'

Sounds fab. I shall give it a whirl. As a kid I always wanted to see Beach of the War Gods, another samurai bonanza.
DeleteIts also reminiscent of the fight scene of Sam with the giant samurai in Terry Gilliam's wonderful 'Brazil'
ReplyDeleteSamurai in Brazil? I shall have to check it out.
DeleteIts a very stylized samurai-like warrior fighting Sam Lowry as he zips about on his chrome wings. Great film, Giliams finest hour! Bill
DeleteI have a bunch of bootleg Bandai Samurai Star Wars figures (the originals were just too expensive!)

Fantastic Looey! Have you taken any action shots of them in the rain?
DeleteI have Ronin figures from Dixon Miniatures. I also have ashigaru, monks and villagers. I use them playing Ronin, a wargame by Osprey Publishing (though other rules can be used).
ReplyDeleteThey sound great Khusru! Send me some shots of them for the blog. Email at the bottom of the page. Thanks!
