You mentioned the word Vintage recently.
Max from Max's Models in the US saw a 1980's car with Antique car number plates. It seems that in America an Antique car is generally one that is 45 years old, but this does vary from state to state.
In Florida, where Max lives, the age limit for an Antique car is only 25 years. That means a car from 1998 is already an Antique!
Is this the experience of other American readers too?

Here's an unattributed Google definition...
ReplyDeleteAntique: a collectible item at least 100 years old. Vintage: A culturally significant item ranging from 20-99 years in age, worthy of being collected. Authentic, aged pieces in various conditions. Collectible: something inherently valuable or worth more than it was originally sold for.
It seems none of these words have totally fixed meanings, and can vary greatly. A collectible, or collectable, can also be an item made to be collected, often in a set, such as the cards that once came in packets of cigarettes or tea. A vintage item does not need to be culturally significant, it usually just needs to be old. But in the world of wine Vintage just means from a specific year, regardless of age. So you can go out today and already buy a bottle of 2022 vintage wine.
ReplyDeleteIt is all very confusing.
Interesting stuff. I suppose the vagaries of words are why some higher-end toys and trading cards have grading systems. Alas, I have nothing graded!
