I saw Martika from Shakespeare's Sister on an old Top of the Pops t'other night. I couldn't help but notice her distinctive curtains haircut.
I immediately thought of the classic German expressionist actor Conrad Veidt and his startling look in the 1920 silent film The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari.
I know Shakespeare's Sister were goth rockers. Did their overall look come from Conrad Veidt generally?
Here's the Sister's belting out the gothic in Stay.
and here's the original trailer for the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari starring Conrad Veidt as Cesare.
Do you like Conrad and Shakespeare's Sister?
I always loved Shakespeares Sister and have been belting out Stay on Spotify recently. I didn't realise Martika was part of the group though, thought it was one of Bananarama and the american girl? Caligari is a classic, but much prefer Nosferatu, which still has the ability to scare.
ReplyDeleteOddly enough me and the Missus found ourselves stood outside the warehouses where Nosferatu I think was shot in Lubeck in Germany a few years back. Symphonie des Grauens!
DeleteMarcella Detroit - the american lass. Hubba hubba!
ReplyDeleteConrad may have been an influence, but I suspect it was 1920s silent German expressionist cinema generally, rather than just him.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right Mish. Whitby is Goth Central nowadays. Lots of expressionists and black eyeliner there.
