As a couple of comments earlier mentioned the F-35 Lightning, I thought I'd repost a few photos I've taken at the various Southport and Blackpool Air shows I've attended.
I should admit I've only ever seen an F-35 landed, so I can't say how loud it is, but I have seen the Eurofighter Typhoon several times fly low in front of the watching crowds, and setting off every car alarm on the beach with the sound of its engines.
Here's a few photos of some of the jet aircraft I've seen on display.
A MiG -15UTI. Sadly, Yuri Gagarin died, together with pilot Vladimir Seryogin in a plane like this
The BAC 167 Strikemaster
The mighty Avro Vulcan XH558 Spirit of Great Britain flanked by RAF Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows .
Those are brilliant photos. I once saw a lightning flying over Southport beach. It turned out to be a radio controlled model, but it was jet powered, made the right noise and flew ridiculously high and fast. Can't work out how the operator could possibly control it!
ReplyDeleteSome of those r/c models can look as impressive as the real thing,Kev.
DeleteDriving around Sweden I noticed aircraft hangers next to stretches of motorway am I correct in saying this is a legacy of the cold war when a single fighter-bomber could act as a lone wolf during conflict? Also while using a virtually empty motorway and there's this massive roar and at no more than 150 feet a Saab Viggen screams over following the curve of the road "Wow we'll never see that again in our lives" and blow me down 5 minutes later he came back in the opposite direction!!
ReplyDeleteWow, that must have been a heck of a sight, MJ.
DeleteI seem to recall you may have mentioned the use of empty motorways as an makeshift aircraft runway in the past. I know there was a concern that airfields would be bombed so short run take off and VTOL aircraft were the order of the day. As a youngster growing up in the sixties I didn't fully appreciate the perceived frightening aspects of the Cold War!
Love those shots Scoop this time round too. Gorgeous light and form. I saw on the local news that the Doncaster Avro fundraising effort hasn't made enough for a permanent hangar for it, which is a shame.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pity, Woodsy, The Vulcan is such an iconic aircraft. I wonder where it will eventually be homed?
