Kevin mentioned these ashtrays.
These where everywhere in the 60's and 70's.
They were spring-loaded and by holding down the 'stick' the three steel flaps swung downwards freeing up entry into the lower bowl. To close the flaps you released the stick.
I seem to recall they were really quite noisy!

ReplyDeleteOn ours the plunger lowered and spun a single disk of metal, flinging the fag butts and ash into the body of the 'ashtray', a bit like a tin spinning top.
Ours was dark metallic blue too.
I remember my mum and dad's table-top version was an attractive green glass. I found it entertaining to press and spin when clean and empty, but best avoided when in use.
