Oh wow.! A child-sized ride-on train set with wagons that runs on tracks, and has a re-chargeable battery. This monster is by Remco, and I bet it was super expensive in its day.
The engine is a modern diesel, called Mighty Casey. Dates from about 1970. What an amazing toy. First up an old TV ad.

Now an unboxing and assembly of what must have been a basic starter set, with an engine, and a circle of track.
The gentleman in this video was certainly keen, and built an entire layout in his garden, for his grandchildren, using a whole fleet of these engines, wagons, and track, plus several hand-built items. Very impressive.
The station is called the Shady Rest, which was the name of the hotel in the TV series Petticoat Junction, at which the Hooterville Cannonball would stop, although this was a steam train.

I bet his wife was thrilled that he dug up the lawn for a giant train set !
ReplyDeletePlus, was there really an engine called the Hooterville Canonball in that TV show and, if so, did they also run the Titfield Thunderbolt on that line ?
In the 1960s there were three US TV shows that over-lapped, and often shared characters: Petticoat Junction and Green Acres, along with the Beverley Hillbillies. The Hooterville Cannonball was an old steam engine with a single carriage that ran between the towns of Hooterville and Pixley, with a stop at the Shady Rest Hotel. This was run by Kate Bradley, and her three daughters Billie Jo, Bobbie Jo, and Betty Joe. Uncle Joe avoided work at all costs. The train was a very important part of the show, bringing guests to the isolated Shady Rest. There were even train sets made - which I have only just discovered. The Hooterville Cannonball even has its own Wikipedia entry.
ReplyDeleteThe Titfield Thunderbolt was a British movie from 1953.
Sorry, hit the wrong key again, the above item is also mine.
