Wotan wades in: rather than bury this under another post, I thought I would add a little rider - the pages from the Dinky catalogue showing this and the Investigator Command Car, re-branded by Dinky. Great models.

I know this model has been covered before on MC, but to re-cap: this was one of two vehicles featured in The Investigator, a proposed TV series from the 1970s. Only a single pilot episode was made, and this can be found on the two-disc DVD set The Lost Worlds of Gerry Anderson, along with many other goodies. The pilot is one Disc 1. This only shows the vessel in the water, so it appears to be a boat. But on Disc 2 there is a selection of still photographs, some of which show the model with its wheels extended, meaning it is amphibious. Dinky made a lot of Gerry Anderson models, and clearly designed their versions in the expectation that the series would go ahead. When it did not, they revised and renamed the models. The amphibian becoming the Coastguard Amphibious Missile Launch, model number 674. The hatch in the bow concealed a missile launcher. The model was not part of the normal TV and film tie-in range, being numbered as part of a small series of naval vessels, a sub-range within the main military series. Hiding it away like this could not have helped sales. As the series was never made, most people would not even realise it was a Gerry Anderson model.
ReplyDeleteApart from previous MC posts, this site on Dinky toys has a lot of information and photos. This even shows the original name of the model, hidden away under the red plastic seats - Investigator Boat.

Great resume Paul. Thanks for all the info. I have that Lost DVD somewhere. I'd forgotten I had it!
DeleteYes, I have a couple of these, one good one boxed and a tatty one for conversion to the Investigator boat (if I ever get around to it). Also got a couple of the car (but no boxes as I keep getting outbid). They are both fun things to have- car sprays sparks and boat shoots missiles, perfect for attacking your airfix soldiers or spooking your cat/dog.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I knew that the boat shoots missiles. I must see that in action somehow Timmy.
DeleteI bought and loved the Armored Command Car when it was imported into the U.S., and although I had no clue it was Anderson-related, I assumed it was at least "inspired" by similar Supermarionation designs. Anyways, it fit my Dinky SF collection perfectly!
ReplyDeleteIt is a fabulous design. I wonder how the series would have gone down with young GA fans at the time if it had been made and aired?
