Just watched Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with Moonbase Junior. Its an amazing animated cartoon considering how old it is. I can't imagine that Disney ever made a more nasty villain than the evil queen. My young grandson covered his face!
Collectables from that original film must be scarce as hen's teeth. I wonder if there was an animated feature before it anywhere?
I believe you are right - Snow White was the first full-length animated feature, followed shortly by The Fleischer's terrific Hoppity Goes to Town, which I think is a better film, but did terribly at the boxoffice. I used to collect silent cartoons from the 1920s on 16mm film, if you can believe it, but they are all long gone. Early animation is fascinating stuff, silent and early sound. You can really see the birth of an art form!
ReplyDeleteIts an excellent film and I enjoyed it a lot as did Moonbase Junior Zigg. Sounds like a great collecting area too Zigg, Like you all my old film reels have been sold. As usual I regret selling them!
DeleteLOTS of animation before Snow White, mostly shorts.
ReplyDeletePrince Achmed (1926)is the oldest surviving feature length animated film. It's great stuff too. All done with stop motion cut-outs over colored backgrounds. Pretty much all done by one German woman named Lotte Reiniger.
It's on Youtube here:

There were some earlier feature animations too, but they're lost.
It wasn't till recently that I realized that Snow White herself was rotoscoped... I'm not sure if any other characters are, maybe the prince.
Fascinating Knobgobbler. I will have to check out Prince Achmed. Does rotoscoping mean that Snow White was played bya real actress and then drawn over to make the animation?
