I've finished my donated JR21 Thunderbird 2!
At least for now!
It's been a great fun distraction during lockdown!
I quite like its wings and the pod door.
The rear red nacelle worked well too.
I'm not too chuffed with the legs though and the white poster paint isn't great.
I'll order some white Humbrol and re-do the legs next week.
I'm leaving the lettering as I quite like the weathered look.
I wonder if you can get Letraset in the same lettering though?
I finished it off with an old JR21 Landrover I found in the attic, which I thought I'd lost. Its missing its windscreen but that's OK.
Its been a lot of fun fixing up this TB2. I've enjoyed it a lot.
If I ever do up another Thunderbird toy I'll try some different things.
That looks great! Keep your customising head on as another TB2 is heading your way shortly!
ReplyDeleteNice one!
ReplyDeleteWow! Nice to see it done!
ReplyDeleteI must get around to my JR21 Spectrum Patrol Car fixer-upper sometime!
I imagine as someone who is getting a lot of experience scratch building, you are learning heaps. I find painting plastics problematical -especially if I'm using Polythene, which nothing ever really sticks to! My solution is to use a light spray of a paint surface prep formula like ESP, although I get even better results if I can put a little "tooth" into the surface with very fine steel wool first!
When you talk about Humbrol paints, are they the traditional oil-based tins we grew up with, or those new-fangled Acrylic types? You may find oil-based paints can react with some plastics -especially soft vinyls, which means they may remain tacky for ages, or ever!
I'd recommend Acrylics like Tamiya or Gunze Sangyo over oil-based paints.
Also (and I realise this may be a little excessive for a part-time modelmaker) you can buy pretty nice small airbrush compressors and air brushes on eBay very reasonably these days and they are great for putting down flawless coats and helping with colour matching.
Anyway, I looking forward to your next triumph! Chers, Looey
Lovely! You have brought the poor battered TB2 back to life. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone. It was fun. I was surprised to find that no-one does replacement parts for this JR21 toy. You can get a repro windscreen for the Landrover though!
ReplyDeleteYou should keep an eye out for a cheap plastic model kits of TB2 in a similar size, Woodsy, then you could use the wings and maybe even the thrusters. Also, I'd reduce the length of the white bits on the legs as they'd look a lot better. Well done on your efforts so far though.
ReplyDeleteIf I get the chance to do another I'll check those out.
