I saw this on Ebay in the US.
I didn't have it as a kid but I would have loved Monster Print Putty by Colourforms.
The illustrated paper included is fantastically illustrated. I love it!
I think I recognise the artist but just can't put my finger on it.
You?
The Aurora monster kits were illustrated by James Bama who along with Basil Gogos who did the covers for Famous Monsters, pretty much set the style for 60's monsterdom. A number of really talented pulp illustrators like Mort Kunstler, Earl Norem (Mars Attacks) and Norman Saunders (Batman cards -and I think the Civil War cards I used to get that came with Confederate bank notes!) had a similar style and could adapt to commercial requirements. Even Wally Wood did commercial work including art for a Fireball XL5 tin lunchbox!
ReplyDeleteSo although I can't say for certain who did the Monster Print art, you could be surprised who actually produced this Jack Davis (Mad) style artwork!
UPDATE I've just Googled it and these sites have interesting things to say...

All interesting stuff Lew. As I collector I've found a set of Mars Attacks cards at a car boot sale and bought a full set of Civil War News [fave card was Trapped] with notes. Alas, both have been sold, which I always regret. regarding Silly Putty, I read the old links with interest. So you don't think its Jack Davis art then?
DeleteJack Davis?
ReplyDeleteThat would seem a reasonable guess.
DeleteLooks like Jack Davis to me...
ReplyDeleteHi Paul! Great to hear from ya! Jack Davis would seem to be the front runner but who knows!
DeleteSomeone online suggested it's actually Wally Wood drawing in the style of Jack Davis! Who knows, indeed!
DeleteBlimey!
DeleteLove that Gamera/Turtlesaurus Rex!
ReplyDeleteIt is ace Brian! I wonder what the artists actually had in mind?
DeleteWeren't there adverts in old Mad magazine's for the Jack Davis school of Art?? -MJ Southcoast Base
ReplyDeleteHis School of Art! Wow! MJ, I would have loved to have gone there! Monster High!
DeleteThe art does indeed look to be Jack Davis' but the art inside the booklet looks more like Wally Wood's. Too close for me to make the call.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean Lance. I wonder if parents were upset by the drawings?
