The First is a good example. A new US series, the First is a drama exploring the first manned mission to Mars. Its a set in a near future where cars are electric and people talk to their homes for things to happen ... so not that far off really. I won't say much about the plot suffice to say it stars Sean Penn as the gritty but caring trainer of the team of astronauts destined for Mars. Its a similar role, so far, to Sean Bean's in The Martian.
I enjoyed episode 1 a lot and look forward to weekly installments of this modern space drama. Are you watching readers?
Back in the Sixties a series like this, adjusted for kids for early evening viewing, would have sent me to the nearest toy shop, dragging my parents behind me. Must-haves would have been the Mars rocket and gantry, the neat cuboid electric car the NASA boss has and the mission control room. Sadly the First is on at 9pm, the British watershed for adult content. Whether this means anything anymore I'm unsure but I doubt the First will spawn any toys for kids. Maybe a Blu-Ray boxed set for grown-up fans eventually.
In the meantime here are my own childish attempts to capture the drama of launch day at Mission Control: Flight to Mars with a few of my space toys.
