I love to find obscure action figures in my old Tomart's reference books.
Its a habit I picked up identifying car boot finds for my old toy stall years ago
One such figure is the Official Disney Davy Crockett doll by the Fortune Toy Company of Jackson Heights, New York from 1955. Fess Parker, who played Crockett on TV, adorns the box.
This particular example is on Ebay USA.
Davy has a cute hard plastic face with sleepy eyes and body and a basic costume with a plastic rifle.
It was originally available through Penney's for a dollar.
What struck me is the similarity of the doll to what I would describe as Dolls of the World.
Like my own Bearskin.
I wonder if Fortune Toys simply repacked an existing sleepy eye doll in 1955?
I couldn't find another similar Davy Crockett doll online but I did find cowboys and cowgirls in the Marcie Doll range.
And this native American Indian girl too.
What do you think readers.
An existing doll just re-boxed as Davy Crockett?
I think it's a perfect addition for any Dolls of the World collection; although I don't think this delicate Disney version of Davy Crockett would have faired well as an action figure in the hands of kids fighting at the Alamo. Do you think the doll looks at odds with the box? Certainly an interesting find though, Woodsy :)
ReplyDeleteI agree Tone, it appears to have been put in an odd box, which makes me think it was an existing western scout doll. I love the obscure figures in Tomarts books. They're 25 years old now!
DeleteAfter playing frontiersman Davy Crockett for Disney in the 1950s, Fess Parker went on to play frontiersman Daniel Boone on TV in the 1960s - I remember the series. As I recall both wore a coon (raccoon) skin hat.
