Its that time of the month again, as the waxing moon approaches the full. Windy and cloudy conditions have made photography difficult, so last night when a gap appeared in the cloud layer, I dashed out.
As I recently invested in a large russian mirror lens, setup takes longer than normal, as I need to use a tripod and a remote release. Just finding the moon and achieving focus is problematic too, as the telescope like lens has a very narrow field of focus. After a few mins, I was ready to roll and went for a low ISO and a shutter speed of around a second and a half. Just as I was lining up to shoot, I heard an airliner passing by overhead and saw it approavhing the general direction of the moon. Hoping for a shot of the moon and the planes lights passing by, I started shooting, after a quick adjustment to drop the moon lower in the frame. Amazingly, the plane flew in front of the lunar disc and my frantic snapping caught it in one of my five quick shots. Even more surprisingly it was even in good focus!
Its just possible to make out the distortion from the vapour trail at the right of the disc too.
The second shot is last months attempt on the moon.
That is brilliant!
