Well, hard to believe but its the second of September.
The ninth month always makes me think of Autumn and I can feel its faded sunshine dusting outside already. The light has changed in the last week from strong bright rays to a sort of misty daylight.
Its still warmish here in the North of England. September seems to be an extension to Summer now, a sort of free gift that came with the holiday special.
But Autumn is restless and wants some me time. Its stirring its own blend of days and nights and the trees know it too.
The first leaves to brown are falling and the fruit left hanging is ready to drop.
I don't think I noticed these things when I was a kid. Just the impact it had on me playing out. I do now though. Must be an age thing.
The endless summer is slowly drawing to an end. Soon the winds will blow, leaves will fly, smoke will rise from autumn fires and the evenings will join the night's dark gang foretelling of the cold one to come at the top of the year.
Can you feel the change in the seasons?
Yep Autumn is definitely here - having to wear a flight jacket in to work now instead of shirt sleeves, this years batch of sloe gin already bottled (made a bottle of damson too out of curiosity), the cat slaughtering woodmice in the back garden like it's going out of fashion !

That gin sounds brill Fenton, nature's larder! I may have made some damson gin myself in the distant blur of the Seventies. I love the line ' cat slaughtering woodmice in the back garden'! Sounds grim for the mice but its a stark image!
DeleteAugust was decidedly mild here. Were still getting 80+ degree days here, but dropping to the 50's at night regularly. In The States this is Labor Day weekend and Monday is a day off from work.We call it the "unofficial end of Summer, although I will still swim in the (ice cold) pool and sun bathe and cook outdoors for at least a few more weeks
ReplyDeletePool and outdoor cookin! we're comin' over! We'll bring some Franks!

Raining now,but will clear up by Sunday afternoon:)
ReplyDeleteFor an average domestic Finnish holidayer this summer has proved to be a disaster, as the weather started to get milder only in August when the holiday season usually is already gone. On the other hand, the forecasts for early September are promising an indian summer of sorts. However, the evenings again are dark and nights pitch black, so that gives an edge, with beautiful starry skies. My favourite time of year.
ReplyDeleteSounds lovely Arto. Very little light pollution must be amazing. There's lights on almost everywhere in the UK! I think in England Northumbria is the darkest place.
