My early childhood holidays were either spent at Butlins in Minehead and Pwllheli.
Other holiday destinations were Ilfracombe, Burnham On Sea, Great Yarmouth and The Isle of Man,
From the start of the 1970's I went on holiday with my older Sister's family to Abersoch in Mid Wales on a caravan site called The Warren. I must have gone five years in a row!
I remember all these holidays being right next to the sea, absolutely red hot and great fun! I used to love buying comics like Caspar and Sad Sack from the holiday shops and always wrote a few postcards.
Where did you go readers and did you go to the same place a lot?
We often went to Belgium! My Dad's sister lived there.
ReplyDeleteThat must gave been fun Kevin, Did you enjoy the food?
DeleteI'm dreadful with food. If it isn't incredibly plain and bland I won't eat it. I'd take a food pill instead if they existed. I'm the opposite of a gourmet.
DeleteYou'd probably like that nutritious paste they eat on the ship in the Matrix Kev! ha ha
DeleteI have always been fortunate to be close to the many beaches of the "Jersey Shore as we call it.Our favorite was Long Beach Island, but we also enjoyed Ocean City and also Wildwood(which I understand you are familiar with).Today I live about 15 minutes from Ocean City and love to visit it's boardwalk in August, when the July crowd has died down a bit but the Labor day crowd has yet to show.A slice of pizza or an ice cream cone (sometimes both!)is something I enjoy eating while watching people walk by or possibly watching fireworks or just a fat full moon over the ocean
ReplyDeleteI would love to live near the sea Brian. I'm currently two hours away from the nearest coast. Ocean City sounds great. A superb name. Can you still get toys in the beach shops?
DeleteWe've come to expect little shops where you can buy sunscreen, towels, hats, sand pails, rubber sharks and a cold drink all at one stop. some are small and some are everyhings-a-dollar stores. There are also family owned chains like Hoy's that have been around for generations.Hoy's has a more comprehensive toy section, but with an emphasis on beach toys like sand castle molds, water pistols, boogie boards, floating toys, pails and shovels,etc...
DeleteI'd love to visit some of those seaside shops Brian!
DeleteChicken in a basket? We had chicken and sand sandwiches, that's way I thought they were called 'sand' witches!
ReplyDeleteH
ha ha, crunchy salmon paste! its the sand that John West rejects that makes John West the best! As for chicken butties, they are my fave: buttered white bread, cooked chicken pieces and salt. Heaven Hugh!
DeleteYes! And I'm not a fan of salt, but on a chicken sandwich, unbeatable!
