I just received this - news that Atlantis are re-issuing two of the classic Aurora Prehistoric Scenes kits from the 1970s - made from the original Aurora moulds. They are described as being available 'soon', but no actual release date is given.
The kits are the Saber Tooth Tiger from 1972, and the Cave Bear from 1973. Both are 1/13th scale, and come with scenic bases.
I know that Aurora kits, and prehistoric animals, are a popular subject with Moonbase Central readers, so I thought this would be of interest.
I never had any of these kits, but I am looking forward to finally getting a chance to build them.
Above is the official Atlantis flyer announcing these kits.

Wow, the “Prehistoric Scenes” series was one of the coolest fringe categories in the whole Aurora line-up. I bet they do well with these reissues. I have concluded that I’m really bad at painting figures, animals, anything organic, so I’ll probably pass on these kits, but if you do build them, please share - we’d love to see how you handle the paint schemes! Some tricky painting in there, I’d say. SFZ
ReplyDeleteThis particular pair are probably not for me, but I loved the dinosaur kits.
ReplyDeleteEven made a super 8 film animation with them in.
Excited to see this! I invested in their giant T-Rex kit back in '09, and I'd gladly buy these!
ReplyDeleteAnyone remember the Tar Pit model with the rhino and the vultures?
ReplyDeleteOh! That reminds me of a funny story.
This past weekend, we went to The Tractor Supply store for some farm supplies. In the back they had a clearance aisle. They occasionally have some Schlich figures back there.
Well, low and behold they had about 20-30 white poodle figurines. All loose, and just laying on the shelf. There was also, one vulture figurine.
I put all the poodles around in a circle and the vulture in the middle as if they'd all cornered it.
My wife laughed.
I have to wonder what the next person who comes by will think...!
Why did the Vulture not simply fly away ?
ReplyDeleteUpdate on the release dates for the Saber Tooth Tiger and Cave Bear. Another newsletter from Atlantis shows the two kits as coming out in the USA in October/November 2023.
I am not very good at painting figures either, but I do want to try these two. I have plans for the Cave Bear...
I think these kits will be a challenge for you, and I’m sure you’ll be up to the task. Solid colors I can do, but anything with feathering, glazing, layering, etc. is rough for me. I need much more practice on these techniques.
DeletePlease keep us updated on this project - I’ll experience it vicariously through you! SFZ
Wow, I had tons of those. In addition to the two above I know I had the cave man and woman, their cave, the neanderthal, the allosaurus and the mammoth. I may have had others too but trust me that was one heck of a summer.
ReplyDeleteOh, forgot about the cave people!!!
DeleteThese look great Paul. Thanks for the heads up! Nostalgia unlimited in a box!
ReplyDeleteTake a lighter to one side of the bear to make Katahdin from PROPHECY.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great film and book, Prophecy. Hardly ever on TV now.
