Sometimes I see similarities where there aren't any I'm sure.
I seem to want patterns!
Take these illustrations. For some reason the spacemen remind me of each other.
I think it's the space walking and weapons and tools like those in this by Kelly Freas.
.
But it's something about the style, a more chunky cartoony style like this Kelly Freas X - Plus soldier.
In my book of Board Games by Desi Scarpone there is a vintage game called Space Angel with a similar cartoony space stye.
Space Angel is not something that I know but I have a feeling it was an animated series. Does anyone know it?
Space Angel was indeed an animated show using minimal nimation but filmed real lips put in place of the characters' own when speaking. The art was gorgeous, kinda of an Alex Toth vibe. The spaceship was called The Stardust error. The hero was Scott McCloud and only had one eye.
ReplyDeleteCheers for that Lance. I'm going to have to look it up on You Tube. I love the artwork too. Starduster, what a cool name for a spaceship! I've certainly never seen this old TV series on UK TV.
DeleteThis was a favorite of mine as a child although in my late teens/early 20s when I came across it again, the lip issue put me off but now I don't mind it.
DeleteAs for why the artwork reminded me of Alex Toth (the wonderful artist who did Jonny Quest), well, it turns out that he actually did the art for the Space Angel episodes! I learned something new tonight. The female for actress was the live action model for Tinkerbell for Disney's Peter Pan and keeping with tradition, our wonderful engineer Taurus is Scottish! The music is quite inspiring and grandiose at times, quite the excellent fit imo. Not the work of Hoyt Curtin but that of Walter Greene.
Starduster not Starduster error. Stupid autocorrect on my phone.
ReplyDeleteIf you look at photos of Alex Toth, you
ReplyDeletewill see that Taurus is a self portrait
Of Alex.
Fascinating that Bob. I'll have to have a look!
