Some photos of the Shado 2 Mobile, one of the three UFO related die-cast models released by Dinky.
The Shado 2 came out in 1971 and continued until 1979. Early versions had a flat roof, which were apparently prone to bending. Dinky added raised 'grill' sections which helped to strengthen things.
They were painted a flat green as Dinky considered them military vehicles, although that would eventually change to blue for much later versions when I reckon Dinky wanted to give the impression that it was a sort of space tank.
My early versions have grey tracks, brown rollers, with a red and a white cabin.
The next versions had black tracks with green rollers, which eventually changed to black.
The roof was also changed to black a little later, and the body painted blue.
The final version had a combination of four large drive wheels and eight smaller middle wheels, presumably in line with Dinky's gradual cost cutting.
The Shado 2 has a single spring-loaded missile hidden under the flip-over roof. I don't suppose the lords of health & safety would allow that today!
Beautiful model beautifully photographed. Still got my original flat roofer from when I wad a kid.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kev, one of the Mobiles in the photos is my original from the seventies.
DeleteLovely shots Scoop. The SHADO 2 was one of my favourite toys as a kid. It was so damn tough as well. Its odd how UFO established a link between aliens and forests. Your SHADO 2's look perfectly at home in the woods!
ReplyDeleteThanks Woodsy. While I think the idea of Ufos landing in urban areas is appealing, I'll stick to woodland for now ; )
