Well its the day after the new Thunderbirds debut on UK TV last night and I'm reading very very mixed reviews online. They range from sheer excited joy from young kids to complete bewilderment from older fans.
With today's 24 hour news and social media anything new in popular culture is immediately scrutinised to the nth degree.
I suppose its only to be expected when someone is brave enough to tinker with one of the most important childrens' television programmes in history.
I suspect that ultimately it won't be fans of the original series at all who make it a success but a new generation of enthusiastic six year olds across the UK getting up at 8am on Saturdays to watch the show. It'll be what they think that counts.
Well after half a century, I think theyve done a stunning job. If anyone thinks its weak, then perhaps they should watch the Frakes movie, to see how not to revamp a franchise. Also, look at the mess DrWho has ended up in, compared to its zenith.
ReplyDeleteIts a programme for a new era, new audience and new technology. I love it
Actually Bill, in the light of your comments here, the new Thunderbirds has just gone up a bit in my estimation.
ReplyDeleteYou are quite right to point out how it could have turned out and there is no better example that than the "new" Dr Who stuff.
I must say, it was remarkably faithful to the original, something that hardly ever happens these days.
I mean, just look at the BBC's recent "Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You My Lad" with John Hurt, hardly recognisable from the M.R.James story or Jonathan Miller's great TV adaption.
Looking forward to the next episode.
Cheers.
