I've always loved Redbox toys. The last one I bought in a shop was as recent as 1990 when I got their spy case from a Next store [Littlewoods].
Here's another Redbox toy, which appeared on fleabay recently; Operation Astronaut. It's a classic Redbox action doll and this one is clearly a Major Matt Mason knockoff complete with space sled!
Of interest to SWORD fans is their use of a Nuclear Ferry illustration on the back and sides of the box as featured below. Nice!
It is most likely a lift from this smaller detail from Robert McCall's original artwork.
The illustration also reminds me of a very similar lifted ferry in the background of the cover of an old Italian Cosmo pulp.
Anybody got any Redbox toys?
The astronaut with the jetpack in that illustration has been "inspired" by another McCall illustration, which appeared in the same issue of Life magazine as the Ferry. They did change the jetpack to the MMM-"inspired" version that came with the toy figure.

AS I recall, RedBox made a series of spy-type guns or gadgets, including a (plastic) projectile firing packet of cigarettes, a cigarette lighter, camera (with small radar antenna and projectile firing, and (one I never had, a radio set. Remember them for sale in Woolworth's. The packet of cigarettes was perhaps the best, as inside the packet was a plastic frame with a tiny automatic pistol.
ReplyDeleteYes, Redbox was connected to Bluebox. It was a division of that company. Their address was Bluebox Building, Hong Kong.
