It sure is a summer of Super Heroes. First we had Superman in Man of Steel. This month Wolverine gets his claws out in Japan. Thor is swinging his way back too this Autumn.
All these huge films rely on a fantastic central character to hold the audience's attention with thier amazing powers. It's only occasionally that a vehicle gets a look in. I can think of the X-Jet in X-men. In fact the last vehicle-based movie I can think of is Transformers. Oh, and The Fast the Furious for petrolheads.
It's interesting to think whether the worlds of Gerry Anderson would appeal to modern cinema going kids. They rely more on fabulous vehicles and machines rather than action characters.
There was talk of a UFO film some years back and Thunderbirds is getting a dusting off for a new release at some point, which will be amazing if it comes off. Wonder if it will be popular?
Which Anderson show or flick would you like to see on the big screen? Would you want a remake?
I remember being very disappointed when Team America: World Police did its satirical riff on Supermarionation but the eponymous team's vehicles were all standard jets and motorcycles rather than anything fantastical. They weren't fans; they didn't recognize that distinctive vehicles were part of the appeal and could be equal targets for parody.
ReplyDeleteThat said: I haven't seen it yet, but everything I've heard about Pacific Rim suggests it's exactly the sort of vehicular adventure you're talking about here.
I would have thought the success of Thunderbirds when it was repeated on TV suggests there is life in the idea yet...
ReplyDeleteHaving siad that, I hate remakes, preferring the originals in every case.
Remakes are very hard to do because you have to satisfty so many, the people behind the money, the fans and yourself. To be inspired by Gerry Anderson is something else entirely and I cant wait for the day somebody with a lot of heart, talent and trust will be able to fufuil the kind of charm and dimension Gerry Anderson brought to our lives.
