I never eat breakfast anymore. Its a concious decision. Its not that I dislike the choice of cereal, its just that its not fun anymore. Opening a new box of cereal and fishing around in the box for the free gift was always the best part. Kelloggs cereal had Space Age, Totem Tribe and Crater Critters to fascinate me and loads of other small figures and kits in between. A few years ago, Nestle got together with LEGO and included cool Bionicle figures in the boxes and then later, simple Knights Kingdom sets. Lately, I just keep finding cornflakes.
I'd often assumed that the only space related premiums had been Crater Critters and Space Age, but I recently
found a rare Hooty Toot Space Shuttle on ebay, which it transpired had a couple of other space themed premiums to accompany it. The series comprised a number of vehicle which doubled as whistles, generally two part kits, which made a fine looking toy.
The selection included a 'Freight Rocket', 'UFO' and 'Jet'. Box back had a playmat kind of design too.
Somewhat later again came the Space Explorers, a slightly lacklustre series of single piece toys, clearly intended to catch the Star Wars bandwagon.

Yes,
ReplyDeleteI miss cereal gifts too.
But I remember that the worst tasting cereals had the best gifts!
Did the gifts ever splash down into your bowl?
ReplyDeleteNabisco SHREDDIES was a steady source of premiums and mail-away toy offers (while growing up)in Canada. Thank goodness it was a respectable cereal that my parents would agree to buy. I noticed some very nice premiums over the years on the box covers of "Count Chockula", Friut Loops, et al. that were forbidden :(
ReplyDeleteI miss the premiums as well...it seems that even Christmas Crackers, which could always be trusted for a nice little plastic goody, are letting us down. Oh well, there is always Kinder-Surprise but its just not the same.
Don't think we ever had Count Chockula in the UK CS. The last monster premium were monster spoons in cereals boxes in the mid- 90's. I have the Frankenstein somewhere. I noticed at the cinema last night that Tim Burton has brought out a flick called Frankenweenie. Wasn't that a cereal premium?
ReplyDeleteAnd Ironically the very last Stan Barton addition was the UFO series and was by far my favourite,, -- he also created some other favourites of mine-- the whirli gigs and designed the novelty whistles "most didnt really whistle well" and they are a hard series to find,,---
