A possible all time low in SF!
This cover from a Lion & Eagle of the 1970s marked the end of some Dan Dare story reprints the comic was running, and the introduction of a home-grown story. I never read the whole thing; it was one where the aliens (scaly looking humanoids) quickly disguised thenmselves as human beings (eg without scales). This was convenient, I suspect, as the artist was better at drawing humans than aliens. I feel similarly cheated when aliens in films disguise themselves as humans -a warning that there is no further need for special effects, and a low-budget film is to follow. As for the secret of Karg, I never found out what it was!

The Secret of the Karg .... was a revolutionary skin moisturiser .... they hoped to corner the market in anti-ageing products (grins)
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, Karg was one of the crew of a bomb-ship sent to destroy Earth, the crew being intended to return home in an escape-craft. Karg was the "Earth Expert" in the crew, and didn't want to blow up Earth (Well, it's tough when your academic speciality gets made obsolete - no more research grants!) so when he went AWOL, the Captain had a problem - the crew all had to insert their keys into the computer to trigger the destruct sequence!

Good gracious, someone remembers it!
ReplyDeleteWell, it sounds like a story with potential. Was the realisation any good, Grif? Did you actually follow it week by week?
ReplyDeleteNo, I wasn't a "Lion" reader - "TV21" and "TV Tornado" were my weekly fare! I seem to remember that it was the same artist who did "Kelly's Eye", "The Wild Wonders" and a few other strips of the 60s - don't know his name! I do recall that Karg had to change back to scaliness to use his alien powers - does every race in the universe apart from us have those?!
