The Monstrous Animal Series by Imai, four fabulous plastic beasts - Nessie, Seauls [how do you say that?], Galba and Bagilla.

Digging deeper into the box art I like Galba's amazing looks the most [I had a jigsaw puzzle box cover - called Monsters - similar to this].

Bagilla too! Look at those teeth!

I've never seen these kits before and don't know the monsters other than Nessie.

DVD Boxed Sets - Does Anyone Still Collect Them?

Here is a gentleman with an extensive collection of DVD boxed sets. 

The Dark Shadows set comes in a large, coffin-shaped box, with the contents making up a large picture of Barnabas Collins. Even better is a plastic model of the Mystery Machine van, with Shaggy and Scooby Doo in the cab. The back opens up, revealing the discs.

The Star Trek Mission New York Show Cards

Back in 2016 there was a Promotional set of eight cards for the 2016 Star Trek Mission New York show featuring members of the original cast.

 

I can not say I had heard of this event at the time. I think only Shatner and Koening attended. 

Any thought of a Star Trek Convention brings to mind the ending of the movie Galaxy Quest which to me is the ultimate comment on the original Star Trek series.

Tampo Printing

This is a technique for printing on to either flat or irregular surfaces.

Using stencils, ink is applied to rubber or silicone pads, which are then used to print on to an object, such as a die-cast model.

It can follow curves, and other complex shapes. In the case of die-casts, it is used mainly on the metal parts, but is also suitable for use on plastic, and other materials.

Early diecasts either had markings, such as lettering, cast-in to the surface of the model; or used paper labels, stickers, decals, or even masked and painted markings.

A few had tinplate parts, which could be printed on to while the tinplate was flat, that were then bent or folded to shape, and applied to the model.

I am not sure when tampo or pad printing was first used on die-casts, but some time around the 1970s or 1980s. Initially, only one or two colours were used, and the markings were fairly basic.

Today, several colours can be used, and the markings can be very complex. Sometimes colours are printed on top of each other.

Even the cheapest Matchbox or Hot Wheels models now use tampo printing for chrome trim (using metallic inks), number plates, headlights, indicator lights, and other markings.

here's a festive bird, the Delta Spacecraft Series BIRD with magic motor! What a fabulous design on that box art. I can't tell you the make and a photo of the kit itself would be good but for now I hope you like it, saved from an old Japanese auction site.

Chris Boucher RIP

I wanted to mark the sad passing yesterday of the writer Chris Boucher.

He wrote some 70's Doctor Who, including the sublime 'Robots of Death', was script editor for all of Blake's 7 and created Star Cops.

He consequently had a massive effect on my life. His characterisation and dialogue was the best.

Rest in peace.

ROCKEM SOCKEM!

I adored this toy as a nipper. Back then it was called Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, a sort of hand-operated plastic boxing match. Wacking the opponent's chin sent its head straight up on a long neck. Great fun!

Different to the set I had, this Marx set pictured is called Clash of the Cosmic Robots.
