Hello Woodsy
As a kid I was taken to three science fiction movies back in the early 50's.
Forbidden Planet
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
War of the Worlds
With Dan Dare in comics I was firmly on track to enjoy science fiction, whether in book form or movies.
I remember being told that War of the Worlds was a book and the story was British rather than the US setting of the movie.
I read the Classics Illustrated comic version before the actual book and for me the sequence of the HMS Thunder Child ramming a tripod was the highlight.
I recently read a Graphic Novel version of the book by Chris Mould which was interesting but didn't mention HMS Thunder Child.
Shortly afterwards I found the bottom of a ship's hull in my parts bin from when I kit bashed a trawler into a coastal tanker waterline model.
That prompted me to research what a Royal Navy Ram looked like and instead found an image of a US Navy one.
Using scraps and bits again from my parts bin I created the steam ram seen here, about to commence sea trials with an Admiral aboard.
Hope you like it.

The Thunder Child ramming one of the Martian Tripods is one of the most memorable scenes in War of the Worlds. A rare example of humans causing any damage to the invading Martians. How could that be left out of any adaption ?
ReplyDeleteYour model certainly does her justice.
Jeff Wayne made good use of the Thunder Child sequence in his musical adaptation of the story. Your model is excellent Terra, I'd love to have a big layout like that to enjoy all the different kinds of vehicles. Bill
ReplyDeleteFab layout Terran. Great idea too. I love War of the Worlds, particularly the book itself and the 1950's movie. More WoW stuff to come!
ReplyDeleteWell done, Terran. I've always thought the Thunderchild sequence was a highlight of Wells' story and something film makers have always shied away from.
ReplyDelete(apart from the excrable Pendragon Films version!)
I was a little annoyed that Mike Trim's great cover art features an ironclad instead of a proper Ram.
Like you, I've done a bit of my own reseach and the British ships of the era looked a bit like fat torpedos, so maybe Jeff Wayne thoight it wouldn't look visual enough, as most of it is underwater!
BTW, are any of you Moonbasers familiar with Roget Dean's rejected concepts for the Martians?
BTW, is anyone familiar with the Dark Osprey book, War of the Worlds
ReplyDeleteby Mike Brunton?
It's a pretty good read, but I was hoping it would be as accurate as Osprey's Militaria subjects. As it is, it still makes stuff up, especially concerning the appearance of the Martian's food source passengers!
