Cleaning up my attic I found my paperback copy of The Worm Ouroborous, which, despite owning for 50 years, I've never read!
My copy is the 1967 edition by American publisher Ballantine. It's a chunky novel.
The fantastic cover art, which made me buy it all those years ago, is by Minnesota-born Barbara Remington, who sadly passed away in 2020.
Barbara Remington also illustrated the covers of the first official (although not the first overall) American paperback publication of The Lord of the Rings on 1965.
Painted in her fabulous style these three books would find a happy home at Moonbase if I found them at a boot sale, although I must say I've never seen them here in Blighty.
Do you like these covers?
Have you got the books readers?
Lovely classic fantasy artwork. Ive never read the worm either, but the thing is, if you started it, would you ever be able to finish it?
ReplyDeleteHa ha, very droll. Ourorobus, it's very meaning!
DeleteBarbara Remington rocks! Lovely fantasy artwork. Unfortunately, I cannot read those long, laborious fantasy novels - they bore me to tears. Short Sci-Fi Stories all the way! SFZ
ReplyDeleteBored of the Rings SF! Ha ha. Listen to it instead, online! Great fun.
DeleteI got a copy of Jack Vance 'The Dying Earth' sequence the other day, so I could see his influence on one of my favourite authors, Gene Wolfe. Five minutes in and the flowery language and unpronouncable names made me give up. Im too old and impatient for dry fantasy, so the seventeenth century style of Ouroboros will not be getting a look in here! Bill
DeleteI've a Jack Vance double ace Bill. Two books in one! You'd love it!
DeleteOh wow! Those three LOTR covers were the ones I first had back in '71-72. Unfortunately, when I bought the hardbound books, my paperbacks were all given away. Thanx for sharing Woodsy!
ReplyDeleteYou still got your hardbacks Ed?
DeleteOh heck yeah!! hahaha I used those to make my annual pilgrimage to Middle Earth for many years! 'The Hobbit' was a separate book bound in green and has a slipcover (or case). The three LOTR volumes were all bound in one large book in red, and also has a slip cover or case
DeletePictures please Gandalf!
DeleteThanks for snaps Ed!
DeleteU betcha!
