In 1993 I bought the brilliant American toy reference book, Toys of the Sixties, by the great Bill Breugman.
Among it's many many treasures that made an immediate impression on me was the Johnny Yuma Rebel Scattergun by Kilgore from around 1961.
A double-barrelled cap pistol with a distinct shape, it came in at least two dark shades, all of which appear to be very collectable.
It emulated the scattergun prop used by Nick Adams in the popular TV show The Rebel. Anyone know it? Here's Dell's comic version.
Here it is as well advertised top right complete with toy cap, belt and revolver.
Always intrigued by it's design I thought I'd have a bash at a custom job.
I first took this cheap fancy dress toy flintlock to start with.
After some sawing and stripping, I added two barrels, a new silver panel and a Fimo stock. I then, opting for a darker look, painted the whole thing black.
See what you think.
Woodsy you are on a roll! Yet another great project. I do remember Nick Adams and The Rebel TV show. During a time when the airwaves were saturated with Westerns, this was one series I did manage to watch and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteA rebel roll! Ha ha, thanks Ed. I was reading that in their heyday there were thirty western shows airing on US TV! Johnny Yuma is too early for me, but I picked up with Bonanza and My fave, the High Chapparal.
DeleteYes, and to think there were only three networks producing content: ABC, CBS, and NBC. I've come across Westerns on Y'allTube that I had no idea ever existed.
DeleteI know Ed, so many! In my books by Rick Polizzi and Desi Scarpone on US board games there's loads of cool TV westerns with great game box art: Gunsmoke, The Virginian, wild Wild West, Davy Crockett, the Restless Gun, Stoney Burke and one I remember the theme tune to, Branded!
DeleteHere's the intro to the TV show "Tales of The Texas Rangers'
Delete( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2F4K7nbcgs ). It was one of my favs as a kid. But here's the odd part: when I was in Germany back in 2002 (2004? don't remember now), one of the German cable channels kept playing this video. Back then German cable was still in its infancy and maybe the channel used this as 'filler' until they could garner some advertisement.
I like that Ed, a marching song. Don't know it or the show. Westerns and cowboys are huge in Germany and have been since Karl May wrote Winnetou. I bagged some LPs of the TV shows last time I was there. Not sure about German cable TV soz.
DeleteJust googled US Board Games guru Desi Scarpone, - I mentioned him earlier - and got supposedly infected by countless viruses on the mobile. Pip ups told me to click on them before complete system collapse! I checked and double checked/ triple scanned my phones security and nothing. Pure phishing! Poor Desi, I won't be googling him again!
DeleteMan, you are a Childhood-Reimagining Powerhouse!
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks Looey! Just finished another one too! Ha ha.
DeleteAnother great project. The Rebel did not make to to NZ, unless it was on before we had a TV set (TV only arrived in NZ in 1960). The speed with which you produce all these great 'vintage toys' is just amazing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul. Retirement is the key. You'll make more models than ever!
