I picked this little stash up at the vintage toy shop in Kirkgate Arcade in Otley, West Yorkshire, t' other day.
The SPV Pizza Hut cup is for Junior at Easter, a bargain at one squid. The Lunar Bug and the 007 Moon Buggy were a fiver for both scrappers.
I adored my Lunar Bug back in the Sixties, its ratchetty legs a clear memory. All sorts of stuff went in the back: spacemen, sweets, you name it!
The large brown Star Wars ship was from another store called the 20p shop. Yep, everything in it is 20p! I also got an amazing book for Junior there, one of my faves as a kid - a story for another day that.
The two lunar junkers will be for Junior too this Easter. A small choccy egg can slide inside the Bug and the cockpit of the Buggy!
But first, to spruce them up.
There's lots of crud, paint loss, missing parts and grime from decades of active duty, so I've set to today and made a start.
I'm not after exact replicas for Junior. He's never seen these vehicles before, so functioning and presentable are the order of the day.
I've given the Bug a new rear door and tightened the wheel legs. The Bong Buggy has got a new radar and a patch on the broken 'ball'.
Both have been washed and mucked out and a first paint layer has gone on with paint pens, but they're no good for large areas, so I've ordered some Humbrol pots of red and white for the main bodies. They're still a mess but should improve with some tender attention.
The little plastic car at the front I've rescued from the Missus's Grandkids' room sort-out. In fact I 'rescued' lots of small plastic bits. Sans canopy, I've stuck a little screen on for effect as I do like this tiny Kinder car. I once saw it advertised as a car from the TV series UFO!
Did you or do you have any of these vehicles readers?
Ive fond memories of the Lunar Bug, especially from seeing it in the first Corgi catalogue entry, with an electric green Corgi Rockets Carabo coming out the back! Its a unique design, clearly borrowing a few ideas from Mac's Car. The Moon Buggy is another cracker with those big grab arms and Diamonds are Forever is still a favourite Bond film! The little yellow car is one of the Kinder Egg range - nothing to do with UFO as you say, but clearly influenced. Bill

They both look really god after the first touch up! Might send mine round for a touch up! Are you going to put arms on the Bong Buggy ? Is James still in situ too or has he nipped off for a smoke ? Bill
ReplyDeleteWotta Bargain! I never had the Corgi Bond, although today I'd love it's off-model charm. I do have the more accurate Eaglemoss version. I did have the Lunar Bug as a child and although I knew it was a direct rip off of Dinky's Joe's Car, I preferred the styling!
ReplyDeleteThe Star Wars tank really needs to be flipped as a Federation ship from Star Trek…perhaps the curved section with missile tubes blended with the top of an AMT Enterprise saucer
