The Thunderceptor was developed as an interceptor by Republic Aviation and first flew in 1949.
Jet technology was moving at a fast rate in the Postwar years and the XF-91s design was soon overtaken by other aircraft. Its biggest flaw - as well as other planes designed around the same time - was its horribly short flight time, around 25 minutes! Of the two built, one still survives and is on display at Wright-Patterson AFB.
Marx never marketed this as the XF-90, however the huge profile of the swept-back wings is unmistakable.

Yet another great toy based on an almost forgotten aircraft. Great articles, really enjoying them.
ReplyDeleteThanx Paul - much appreciated!
DeleteSo cool Ed! Your an aviation toy archivist! Wunderbar!
ReplyDeleteThanx Woodsy! When I started collecting planes it was a hit-or-miss affair - buying Navy or Marine aircraft. Then I settled into into mostly USAF and can almost trace the Air Force's whole progress through the years in toys. Let me know if you want to see more.
