I saw a student organising his Pokémon trading cards t'other day.
It was fascinating to see and brought back memories of me doing the same in the late Sixties and Seventies.
I'd like to say I collected iconic Topps sets like Mars Attacks and Civil War News but I didn't. My big brother did so I know I saw them in the house. Oddly enough I have owned both complete sets since!
I did collect ABC Batman and Captain Scarlet cards. I also swapped football cards. Maybe Shoot comic had something to do with this.
I remember little folded Super Hero cards as well. I think they were called folders.
Ah, the meek freedoms and simple pleasures of being a kid!
Did you collect and swap trading cards readers?
In Britain, nearly everything seems to have come with a card, but in NZ cards were far less common. Nothing in packets of tea, and we had toast for breakfast so we ate very little in the way of cereals. Gregg's Jellies had bird cards in the 1960s and 1970s. I think we had all of these, with the cards glued in to albums. Mostly NZ birds, but there was also a Birds of the World series. These ran for long enough that you could complete the set. You could also send in your duplicates as swaps, with a list of the cards you required, and they would send you those you needed to complete a set. Great fun, and very colourful.
ReplyDeleteI love how you could send in for your wants Paul. When companies did stuff like that i think they really tunes into what Kids were about.
DeleteMy friend had Civil War cards as a kid, they were too gory for me, but I was fascinated by the big wads of Confederate bank notes he amassed as a bonus from the packs. My strong memories of card collecting centre around the James Bond Somportex "You Only Live Twice" film strips. Did anyone else collect these?
ReplyDeleteHmm, I've heard of those film strips Looey but never seen them. I had to chuckle at your 'big wads of confederate bank notes'! I wonder if they're legal tender!
DeleteAll the time, Thunderbirds gum cards, Brooke Bond tea cards and all kinds of other stuff that i could cram into my pockets and sneak into school!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great image, pockets stuffed with cards at school! What else Wote? sweets, a pea shooter and a dried-up frog maybe!
