I was thinking back to a cartoon I loved as a kid, the Harlem Globetrotters. I remember the bald funny guy called Curly the most. It was a lot of fun even though I'd never played basketball in my life. The theme music has just come to me too, a lot of doo-doo doo-doo's. Did you like it readers? I wonder of there were collectables from it?
I know it was based on the real-life team The Harlem Globetrotters, but I don't recall them that much. They were on the telly and for some reason i think they toured England. Were they a real basketball team, say, in the American NBA?
I remember the cartoon. A quick look shows there was a View-Master set (the cover shows the real players), a Gold Key comic based on the cartoon, a couple of hardback Annuals, and various modern figures. Basketball is very big in America, so I am sure there were other items as well.
ReplyDeleteA Vu-Master eh! Wow! They must have been big at the time.
DeleteI do remember it.
ReplyDeleteI think there was a player with the unlikely name of Meadowlark Lemon (at least that's what it sounded like).
That does ring a bell Mish.
DeleteThe Globetrotters used to come to Philadelphia all the time.I saw them several times at the Spectrum in Philly, the same place that I saw many rock concerts. The Globetrotters were always fun to watch with all the flashy moves they did.
ReplyDeleteYes, I recall those flashy moves Brian! Fabulous!
DeleteBig in the 70s in the UK when they first came over and performed. They're an exhibition show team, still going today and promote both the sport and charity work. The other teams tend to let them runs rings round them win as it's all for fun and a good cause. They would not be allowed to do the moves they play in a real game and certainly would have little chance of winning aganst many of todays teams. I remember the cartoon too, the cartoon characters also appeared in an episode of two of Scooby Doo back then. More reecnetly they also appeared in Futurama.
ReplyDeleteReally, in Scooby Doo Yorkie? How brill. I adored Scooby Doo! Those pesky basketball players I bet they said!
