I love these Mold A Rama 1962 World's Fair souvenirs.
Were they made at the Fair I wonder?
You got the Century 21 arrow symbol, the Seattle tower and more, but I'm unsure what the other two represent.
These were online so I saved the image. It must have been an amazing experience to go to Seattle's fair in 1962. I was 1.
Not sure if the UK had any national festivals like this in the Sixties. They did in the Fifties.
Here in Wales we had a National Festival called Croeso 69. (Welcome 69) It was a celebration of the Investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969.
ReplyDeleteIn Cardiff they had a massive event at Serfire Gardens, a huge park by Cardiff Castle. I remember going there and taking a ride in the Apollo Command Module simulator. I was in the centre seat. And for a space nut kid of nine years old, that Easter trip felt like the highlight of my life!
They also had the real Apollo nine CM there all burned and blackened from reentry. Additionally there was all manner of things to do and see. I also got to do some spin painting, and still have the artwork somewhere.
Of course for me it represented all that was good and exciting that was happening that year; from the TV21 comic, through to the moon landing and even Star Trek hitting British television.
Sounds fab Bill. A complete Sixties space race memory that. Croeso 69 sounds wonderful.
DeleteThat Command Module simulator had come from NASA so it was an actual sized one inside and out. Full control panel proper seats with harnesses. You climbed in, and were strapped in on your back. Then it swung through 90 degrees to horizontal flight. Pitching and yawing and really exciting.
ReplyDeleteOne of the kids in there with me, as there were three of us, got scared and when he got out, started to cry. But I was fine. It was all over too soon for me. But at Five Shillings a time, once was all we could afford.
I visited Los Angeles in 1978 for my 21st birthday (thanks mum & dad!) I remember seeing a Mould a Rama in the forecourt of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, offering a jade green lump of polythene in the shape of the entry gate. I've never regretted not buying one!
ReplyDeleteha ha, I'm chuckling at that Looey!
