I've seen another two films this week.
Army of the Dead - with big Dave Bautista and a crew of hardened zombie-slayin' mutha's in Los Angeles. Normally I don't watch zombie films anymore as they are predictably, well, zombie-ish. I have been sick of shamblers for some time. But AoD gives the genre a critical blood transfusion and we get some pretty mean modern zombsters. Its a very current film, which Wotan recommended, so I won't spoil anything here. Suffice to say I'm glad I listened to Wotan!
DOOM: this is a much older flick and one based on a computer game I reckon. As Netflix listed it as a creature feature I thought I'd jump in and see what the monsters were like. They're OK I suppose and enough to keep the pace monsterish. The best beastie was a huge dog-like critter attached to a wheelchair. Overall though DOOM is about blasting and shooting and shooting and blasting. I imagine it kept game hungry players amused for a while when it came out. Reminiscent of other flicks like AvP and Resident Evil set in big labyrinthine bunkers.
Have you seen either of these?
I saw Doom, with the Rock as the lead player. I'm not a gamer, so the subtler (ho ho!) details eluded me!
ReplyDeleteYes, Rock and subtle don't go together Looey! ha ha
DeleteDoom is derivative crap, great game, but too two dimensional to get a film out of it. AotD is another matter, on the face of it, its a darkly comedic zombie flick, crossed with a heist movie, but behind that is the suggestion of a time loop, extraterrestrial zombies and even cyborg/mecha zombies! Worth a watch for the cinematics, using vintage analogue camera lenses on digital backs, for a beautifully atmospheric look.
ReplyDeleteYes Wote, there was more to Army of the Dead than just rotten flesh. It appeared to be a homage to some great late Seventies and eighties movies. Zack Snyder clearly likes to nod at his influences. I really liked the King and Queen and zombie tiger trio. The last zombie flick I saw before this was World War Z.
