The North Yorkshire market town of Selby on the River Ouse is an interesting place.
There are lots of charity shops for one.
Along with the Missus yesterday I picked up this lovely Corgi Juniors Manta. It really does remind me of a UFO TV series car. Is it one you had?
Also this somewhat playworn Corgi Burtone Shake Buggy
A few quid paid for these old Meccano magazines from 1964-66.
The rear covers are all colour ads for die-casts like the odd Dinky Beats [why not just say The Beatles?] and space tea cards. There's an article on the making of Fireball XL5 too!
A proper shop with proper prices was selling off tons of Thunderbirds Are Go bop bags, second shelf down. There were more stacked in the shop too, obviously not selling. Would you buy a TB1 or TB3 bop bag?
Walking round the edges of the town centre we saw this plaque for Yorkshire's first rail station.
with its old goods yard doors. How big are they!
There's a flour mill nestling on the River Ouse just off the town centre.
Old iron bridges spanning the river too
and somewhat soberingly a plaque on the cathedral graveyard fence for a past pandemic!
There's something for everyone in Selby!
British charity shops are amazing. I never find things like these in NZ.
ReplyDeleteI do not even know what a Bop Bag is, so I can not say.
A bop bag is an inflatable stand-up bag that can be bopped or punched Paul.
DeleteI concur with Paul A! The "Old Dart" is unlike anything in the antipodes where stuff is never more than 200 years old and anything that hasn't been in the shops for ten years is classed (and priced) as an "Antique"!
ReplyDeleteI think I can help solve Paul A's nothing in NZ mystery. About 30 years ago, I was invited to appear on NZ TV in my Lost In Space Robot suit. I performed in a comedy skit on a show called "Issues" and the actor playing Dr. Smith told me how he had scoured the NZ op shops for every single vintage Anderson related die cast!
Oh, and I had a Manta car in dark blue metallic paint.
BTW, would you consider scanning and posting the making of XL5 article?
That's interesting Looey. By the way, the 'bible' of Anderson toy collecting is a memorabila guide by a fellow Ozzie called Dennis Nicholson. Dennis wrote and compiled his book using thousands of photographs he too of as many Anderson collectables he could find. Up to 1996 its definitive. Well worth tracking down if you ever see a copy. I'll look into the XL5 article.
DeleteThank you for the information on what a bop bag is. My next question is, Why ?
ReplyDeleteKids like boppin bags Paul. Punchbags.
DeleteSorry, forgot to add my name. Again. Unknown at 7:22pm is me.
