I associate Max Head Head Headroom with TV programmes like Lexx for some reason. Maybe they were on during the same period?
Max was always a good laugh as long as you could cope with the jerky movements. I've no idea what he went on about now though.
Do you remember Max?
I remember the drama series (in the uk, the video DJ thing was better known, but the US drama series was shown). It was quite good.
ReplyDeleteDon't think I know the Drama series Kev.
Deleteuk pilot film adapted into series
Deleteall before the vid show and the interviews and soft drink adds
gritty cyberpunk journalism straight out of 2000ad comics
He was investigating a crime and was killed but somehow his persona was uploaded to a computer and he survived as the Max Headroom character. Max Headroom was written on the barrier he crashed into, it was the last thing he saw as he died.
ReplyDeleteExcept Edison Carter didn't die. He gets taken to kid scientist Bryce Lynch who creates Max as a facsimile of Edison Carter, to fill in for him while he convalesces.
DeleteMax somehow ends up on Blank Reg's pirate TV station and takes on a life of his own.
I'm not sure if the show is considered 'cyberpunk' but that's how my brain catalogues it.
dystopian future check
Deletecynical class struggle check
consciousness pushing technology with humans and machines check
very cyberpunk - more so than many things later
All fascinating stuff guys. Thanks for the headroom!
DeleteI'd forgotten some of the details of that. I do remember enjoying the show at the time.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it in forever, but it made a big impression on me... orgaleggers, blipverts, Blank Reg... it was dark comedy scifi. Would have fit right in some issue of 2000 AD.
DeleteWasn’t he intercut with commercials on The Tube show or some similar thing on Channel 4? Way ahead of its time, he’d be quite ordinary today.
ReplyDeleteGreat insights guys!
