Being a Black
Hole film fan I’ve finally managed to get my hands on the two sets of
Diamond Select Black Hole figures.
These figures
apparently sold out at pre-order stage so I’m double chuffed.
I’ll do a
proper review in the fullness of time, but just looking at them in their bubble
packs I can see there’s plenty of accessories and a display plinth for each
set.
Maximilian
comes with a black circular stand giving the impression the robot is hovering,
while V.I.N.Cent and B.O.B. come with separate stands and
a diorama.
I understand
that if these sets sell well, Diamond Select may release more Black
Hole figures, so my fingers are crossed for that.
Cool, Interesting that they've brought these out as I didn't think the film did that well at the box office? I remember having the MPC kits of V.I.N.Cent and Max back around 1980, along with the Cygnus ship. They were pretty large kits, the Cygnus was massive though made of all grey plastic. Wished they'd made a kit of the Palomino too.
ReplyDeleteMego did plan a Palomino toy, scaled to the figures, but as the film bombed, the line was cancelled
DeleteYes, at the time it was Disney's most expensive film and the first to get a PG cert. It cost around twenty six million dollars to make, and made a profit of around nine million dollars, far less than expected. It went through a lot of rewrites, starting out as a disaster movie which were popular in the early seventies. Originally, it would have been a typical Disney family film, but since Disney had not had a proper hit since The Jungle Book, and seeing the success of Star Wars thought they'd take a gamble with something darker. Sadly, it didn't work out. However, over time the film has become a proper cult classic with a lot of people who enjoyed it first time round, hence these new pieces of sell out merchandise.
DeleteAn odd but welcome release, so long after the film. I had the MPC kits, only got Vincents brain left now and possibly bits of Max. The Cygnus was a horrible kit, way too big and a nightmare to paint. I ended up putting lights in it, but as the MPC Millenium Falcon came out at the same time, my efforts went on that. I got the rather nice Mego Black Hole figures, which kicked Star Wars figures into a cocked hat. Unfortunately, the UK never got the second wave with Bob, android and Captain Star. Theres a brilliant magnetic line of seven inch figures by Gig of Italy too. Maximillian is one of my favourite robots ever, superbly sinister and inimical. They look like great figures indeed
ReplyDeleteAllegedly they are available at Walgreens but Max has fewer accessories and you only get V.I.N.CENT and no Old Bob in the other pack. The third figure of the case is The Rocketeer but no word if he is at Walgreens as well. :(
ReplyDeleteI've seen those smaller packs on eBay and wondered what they were. Obviously only available in the States, then. Thanks for the info, Lance.
