I have been on tenterhooks since Saturday.
Blurb sent my new book via UPS from Eindhoven that morning. It arrived today in a large flat card case.
I was nervous as anything opening it up and like all new creations its like delivering a new baby I guess.
Toy Bunnies on Plastic Scooters: Vintage Sixties Plastic Novelties from Jack Rosenthal Toys.
This book has been 8 years in the making and this was the proof copy from Blurb, the first off the press to inspect for typos and ticks.
I can't deny it's a large and gorgeous coffee-table book, which I've enjoyed getting in the post immensely.
Like all proof copies it has thrown up editorial issues and resolution concerns. My biggest worry for a while has been the price that Blurb want to charge, a price which will undoubtedly prohibit any sales. This is as a result of the number of colour pages.
Seeing my book in the flesh for the first time has allowed me to consider ways of compacting the contents and reduce the number of pages without losing any of the readability.
It'll take some time this winter but hopefully now I have my proof copy I can boil it down to a better edition and actually publish.
In the meantime here are a few snaps of the book's arrival this afternoon.
Thanks for the first glimpse of a long-awaited treat, Woodsy. Looks so luxurious!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Arto. It's nice to have it in my hands at long last.
DeleteLooks gorgeous at first sight, Woodsy! Curious to see the rest of it as & when.
ReplyDeleteBest -- Paul
Cheers Paul. It'll take me a while to fix but should be worth it.
DeleteLooks mighty fine Woodsy! Blurb is a bit of a nightmare in terms of production - I set to with grand dreams of a coffee table Micronauts book, but costs were so prohibitive, I had to cut it back to a smaller softback. I have to say thought the print and production quality is superb, so its probably worth splashing out on one luxury item for the author!
ReplyDeleteYep, the author will probably be the single owner of the book in this format! Lovely to have at long last Wote. Thanks for your help.
DeleteA sunstantial work of research by the looks of it. Good luck with the trimming process. Proof copy looks fab... well done Woodsy :)
ReplyDeleteCheers Tone. it is a glossy thing and I'm chuffed I shelled out for this proof copy. I've a few editorial decisions to make now before I begin to change it.
