Aye t'was definitely on telly in the good old 60's - I remember that cheesy theme tune as well.Never twigged it was japanese at the time tho - for some reason it's always "twinned" in my mind with Marine Boy altho - without googling it so may be wrong - I think that was a few years later.
Yes indeedy, used to watch it in the '60s. Got an articulated figure (along with a non-articulated figure of his boy companion). Bought them both around 20 years ago, but they were packaged under his Japanese name mentioned in BF's comment. He'll always be Gigantor to me though.
Yes I remember Gigantor. I too associate it with Marine Boy, as they looked similar, perhaps because they were both Japanese, I think. Or perhaps they both appeared on 'Zokko', the BBC's Saturday morning kid's tv 'magazine' show ( long before 'Swap Shop'), presented by a robot pin ball machine ( I kid you not ) ! Anyone else remember that ? Mish.
There's been several incarnations of Tetsujin 28 (Iron Man 28) /Gigantor. I recall watching the original b&w and it wasn't until Bandai started importing in the Godaikin toys to the states in the early 80s that he crossed my path again as I was just starting my soon to be heavy involvement in anime. This was do to the second series that started up in 1980. It was called Shin Tetsujin 28 (New Iron Man 28). The Godaikin toy is a beast of metal and gizmos and a MIB example can set you back around $6000 US nowadays. The third series came along in 1992 as my involvement with anime was starting to wind down. It was called Tetsujin 28 FX (Iron Man 28 Future X) and featured an updated design to T28. What was nice was the original T28 was in the show also, used as a sparring partner for the new version.
There was a 2004 series but I never saw any of it. Bonus fun fact: The 1980 series was shown here in the states on ScyFy from 1993-97 and was called The New Adventures of Gigantor.
Its a complex area by the looks of it Lance and I can see you know your stuff. I know nothing about Gigantor so its all an education for me as a complete Anime novice. Gigantor sounds like a true pioneering show and I can see youre passionate about him. Thanks for sharing this with us. BTW does Shin mean new? I'm thinking of the latest Godzilla flick, Shin Godzilla. New Godzilla?
Depending on how it is written in kanji, shin can mean extend, true, new heart, belief, progress, humility, advance or gentleman.
In the case of Godzilla, Shin is written as シン which are the characters Shi (often said as Si) and Hin. I may a bit off on the exacts as it has been years since I last called upon my deciphering skills so I'm rusty. But yes, New Godzilla is what we got.
Some, I'm self taught thanks to the early days of my collecting. Kind of had to learn what was what through Japanese magazines I would get at Nipan Daido here in Houston and then I'd know what tapes to rent to watch shows I wanted to see.
There are toys, but they might be called by their original Japanese name Tetsujin 28-go
ReplyDeleteCheers for the info Brian. If this was on the UK then I was asleep.
