I've started to watch an old ITV mini-series called CHIMERA. I saw it years ago online and maybe when it was first shown in 1991, 28 years ago!
Aired on TV 6 years after Edge of Darkness, Chimera deals with similar themes: shady government units, mysterious murders, no-go security areas, a stealthy protagonist and an eco-disaster at its dark heart, in this case genetic engineering, hence the cryptic title.
I'll write a bit more when I'm done in a few days but Chimera is already an enjoyable watch. All episodes are available on You Tube complete with 1995 UK TV adverts!
Chimera certainly won't have spawned any merchandise or toys as it wasn't for kids really. It was part thriller, part horror. I imagine nowadays a series like this might be made by Netflix or Amazon. Maybe not?
I'd like to think there was still a place for excellent thought-provoking TV sci-fi series like this on television, especially for evening viewing. The last one I can think of was Hard Sun [although I thought it a missed opportunity] and A Handmaids Tale [or is that Netflix? not seen it but heard lots about it].
Are the budgets for terrestrial TV sci-fi series on the BBC and ITV, apart from Dr. Who, getting less do you think readers?

Merchandise Postscript:
There are a number of different editions of the original novel, Chimera by Stephen Gallagher, who I understand also has Dr.Who writing chops. It would make an interesting collection.
This is a US edition of the book.
