Great toy. I had two as the barrel broke on the first one. The plastic was pretty brittle IIRC. Very softy rubbery bayonet. I also had a Tommy Gun that i think Airfix made as well.
I rememnber the floppy plastic bayonet clearly too. It clipped onto the Front with a satisfyibg click. The cocking lever was just ace. Would this type of Toy be allowed now?
In the US I've noticed that plastic toy assault rifles are sold in States that have 'loose' gun laws. They are less popular near large cities.
The Airfix weapons were a big improvement on the old tin rifles sold by Woolworths that were pop guns complete with corks. The black painted tin with a light brown wood butt were not at all realistic.
I loved those cork guns Terran. I think I had one with the cork attached to a string. I can imagine toy guns being contraversial in the States. But nit just there. The police shot a teenage kid in Sweden this week who was walking through a town with a plastic toy gun.
I had two different versions (neither of them Airfix) seem to recall them being LoneStar / Marx . I loved these guns as I was Army~Barmy as a kid and was always going to join up when I was old enough. One was entirely black bakelite and very fragile (barrel quickly snapped) the other (LoneStar) was surprisingly solid and a mixture of metal and plastics, the detachable magazine fed rolls of paper caps. To my eternal dismay I stupidly smashed it up in a fit of pique over something trivial I expect that my Mum had asked me to do. I cried for hours afterwards and sadly they were no longer selling them in Woolworths or wherever it came from and it was lost forever - sobs !
That was one heckuvva tantrum Fenton smashing up your toy rig=fle like that. I bet millions of toys have been chucked and stamped on over the centuries in fits of childish anger! Were you tempted to get one back on Ebay?

ReplyDeleteTommy Guns had that fab sound effect didn't they, the classic machine gun noise. Not everyone's cup of tea but kids loved noises like that back then!
DeleteYep, I had one, loved it!
ReplyDeleteYes, I had the Thompson (Tommy) machine gun, too!
