Been car booting a few times this summer. One toy I picked up was for my Grandson as he loves toy cars. Before he gets his hands on it I thought I'd ask you if you know it.
Its marked TONKA, dated 1983 and made in Japan. The side graphics says Dave Shock Wave. There's a small yellow button n the top of the roof and the rear wheels are much bigger and within a weighted axle.
Here's a picture of the same toy I found on an old auction online.
Anyone know it?
I never owned this one as a kid but a friend did but damned if I can remember which friend. What I can recall from the dimly lit recesses of my mind is that you revved the car like it was a friction motor. Once you got it to speed you placed it down and instead of it taking right off like a friction motor car, you had to press the yellow button on the roof aka pop the clutch to engage the gear and then it would take off. And yes, the toy line was Tonka Clutch Poppers.
ReplyDeleteGreat info Lance. Clutch Poppers! That's a memorable name. Its the first one I've seen I think. I like the idea of a delayed start. Didn't another toy in the Sixties do that? Sizzlers?
DeleteNot Sizzlers. Those were rechargable battery powered Hot Wheels. I'm drawing a blank for another car that did that but I'm sure there were several. Probably in a month it will come to me lol
DeleteSizzzlers was the electric motor version of Hot Wheels, which you charged up a battery in the car and let it run around a fat track. Hot Wheels also had Revvvers (multiple letters intentional again!) which where a rubber band powered dragster.
